Major Release of Dynamics SL Expected in First Half of 2018

Jeff Suwyn of Microsoft revealed the latest Dynamics SL roadmap during an October 3, 2017 webinar.

The next major release of Microsoft Dynamics SL will debut next year, Microsoft announced. The much-anticipated updated version is expected sometime in the first half of 2018.

Microsoft initially planned to announce the news at the annual Dynamics SL User Group (DSLUG) Fall Conference last month, but the conference was postponed until next spring due to hurricane threats.

Rather than wait until the rescheduled April 2018 conference to announce the news, Microsoft Dynamics SL Product and Marketing Manager Jeff Suwyn held a webinar version of his planned General Session. During the Oct. 3 webinar, he announced the latest version of SL and revealed a new product roadmap.

Few details are available so far regarding Dynamics SL 2018, but we do know that the product will feature the latest technology related to Power BI, Power Apps and Flow. We can also expect improvements to Web Apps and, as always, specific features requested by users.

Prove It Before You Purchase an ERP System

If you are evaluating a new ERP system, how can you ensure you choose the right solution, which when implemented, truly performs and meets your requirements and automates your processes?

At Synergy, that answer to that question is to engage a Prove-Before-You-Purchase Prototype of the top solution you determine from your evaluation of short-list demos.

How It Works

The Prove-Before-You-Purchase Prototype starts with a Needs Assessment to develop your precise system and a configuration and implementation plan. Then we use your real data (chart of accounts, general ledger, customers, vendors, projects, etc.) to configure your solution utilizing all the software modules that are appropriate. This would include an abbreviated Chart of Accounts and all the critical transactions you need.

A project-based company, for example, might have transactions for Project Accounting, Project Management, Accounting for Labor, Order Management, Purchasing, Project Reporting, and Financial Reporting.

Then, in this configured working solution—not a theoretical demonstration—we present it to you onsite to prove it meets your critical requirements before you order the software. It’s the best insurance you can buy.

No Extra Cost in the Long Run

Moreover, the resultant Prototype, although a paid engagement, will be developed in such a way that it can be used as the actual implementation starting point for your system implementation. So, when things move forward, there is no extra cost to you.

Clients Value the Prototype Approach

One of our clients described comparing systems and engaging Synergy for a Prototype this way:

“Synergy helped us thoroughly compare systems,” said Michele Gargaro, Controller at TDA Research. “Through deep-dive demonstrations and the prove-before-you-buy Prototype, they showed that Dynamics SL was the right choice for us to meet our specific business requirements, from government compliance to internal reporting.”

The Prove-Before-You-Purchase Prototype provides you with the opportunity to evaluate all the functionality of the solution and experience the system prior to the purchase of the software and committing to the full implementation.

When You Have More Exacting Reporting, Forecasting, and Budgeting Needs

Sometimes, Dynamics SL or NAV users have more exacting and comprehensive needs for Financial Reporting, Planning, Forecasting, and Budgeting beyond what a tool like Microsoft Forecaster delivers. That’s when Solver’s BI360, the self-service business intelligence suite, can come into play. BI360 offers modern, dynamic reporting, budgeting, and dashboards with out-of-the-box integrations to Dynamics SL or NAV.

Make Better Decisions Faster through Collaborative Reporting
BI360’s report writer offers groundbreaking collaborative functionality, allowing your managers to be alerted of major discrepancies, quickly access and analyze reports that reveal business issues or opportunities, and add questions or commentary directly with the reports to share new insights.

Produce Complete Budgets and Forecasts through Collaborative Planning
BI360’s budgeting module provides your organization with a complete data entry interface to capture strategies, goals, budgets, forecasts, and what-if scenario models. You can distribute ownership, so your team can access, review and share new insights into your budgeting activities, discuss and define strategic plans and targets, and then share these with the budget users.

Synergy and Solver did a webinar recently expressly for Dynamics SL or NAV users who need this extra functionality and are considering replacing Microsoft Forecaster. To evaluate whether this is a solution for your company to meet performance-driven reporting requirements, sign up here for the:

Need Dashboards? We have an App for that!

There’s a variety of ways for Dynamics SL users to build and view useful Dashboards for their teams. Dashboards are real-time user interfaces showing a graphical presentation of your company’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). They show both the current status and historical trends of KPIs that enable you to make accurate evaluations and informed decisions regarding your company’s performance.

Each user can have their own Dashboard that displays what is important to them. A Project Manager might view her projects’ performance or resources. An Executive might view total project work, top projects, and top project managers. A Sales Director might view sales by salesperson or by customer. Again, you decide what is important for members of your teams and set up Dashboards with user-based security so people only see what they are authorized to see.

Our own Donna Hurst and Kevin Graham recently taught a webinar that shows you how to set up Dashboards with Dynamics SL data three different ways—in Excel, SSRS, and Power BI. This helps you see the advantages of each and decide which type is best for your company or team.

When You Need to be Wary of the Hype Around the Cloud

spacer_124_wide
It’s true that cloud-based ERP systems have major advantages. They can get you out of the IT business. Especially for start-ups, paying for a system with the software-as-a-service (SAAS) model can be cost effective when you compare it to paying salaries for an in-house IT Team and costs for hardware, servers, utilities, and backups. Moreover, a true Cloud system (multi-tenant and not hosted) makes upgrades minimally disruptive and basically routine as they take place in the background with no direct costs like the traditional upgrade model.
spacer_124_wide
When to Be Wary
On the other hand, oftentimes, true Cloud products haven’t grown up yet. They deliver fundamental functionality and some bright-and-shiny modern features, but still can’t compete with some tried-and-true on-premise solutions, which are actually just as “modern” or even more so.

One area where this is especially true is in project accounting, job costing, and government compliance. Cloud products tend to lack the depth of capability required for these functions. Seldom can Cloud solutions effectively deliver sophisticated allocations, complex job cost accounting (e.g. costing on the task level, etc.), truly flexible reporting, and indirect rate management for Cost Reimbursement government contracts.
spacer_124_wide
What Really Counts
The desire for a “modern solution” can blind people to recognizing a system that efficiently performs the critical functions they need. The answer is to realize, whereas there are compelling reasons to consider a cloud-based system, at the end of the day what counts is implementing a solution that truly streamlines your business.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 and other cloud-based products are still relatively new to the market. Or, they are in a suite of products that may not have flexibility to integrate with critical third-party enhancements. If your core business is project-based—professional services, research, engineering, construction, make-to-order manufacturing, etc.—or you are in the federal/state government market, consider this: We have seen traditional on-premise systems like Microsoft Dynamics SL blow the emerging cloud or suite products out of the water… or should I say, out of the sky!
spacer_124_wide
The Best of Both Worlds
What’s more, if it’s the IT business you want to get out of, an on-premise system like Dynamics SL can be hosted in the Cloud to ensure you gain the essential Cloud advantages.

At Synergy Business Solutions, we help companies make the ERP system comparisons necessary to make the right choice. As a reseller of both on-premise (Dynamics SL and Dynamics NAV) and cloud (Dynamics 365) solutions, we are happy to assist you in your evaluation process. There is a time to be wary of the Cloud option and we help you discern when that time is and why long-standing modern on-premise systems often give you what you really need with or without hosting cloud technology.

Microsoft Dynamics 365, Dynamics SL, and Your Business

Dynamics 365 and Dynamics SL

Made available on November 1, 2016, Dynamics 365 is Microsoft’s next generation of business intelligence applications in the cloud. It’s a cloud-based financial management solution that is highly integrated with Microsoft CRM and Office 365 with powerful capabilities for sales and operations. Companies on Dynamics SL may be asking, “What impact does this have for Dynamics SL users?” Companies searching for a new system, should ask, “How do we know if we should consider Dynamics 365?”

First, “What impact does this have for Dynamics SL?” None! Dynamics SL continues to be Microsoft’s top solution for project-based organizations with its powerful flexibility and phenomenal project accounting capabilities, including easily handling DCAA compliance for government contractors. Microsoft will continue to release new enhancements and fixes to Dynamics SL. As stated in the product roadmap, Dynamics SL has a planned development timeline as does all of Microsoft’s on-premise product lines. A Cumulative Update (CU2) for Dynamics SL is planned for December 2016 and a new major release is planned for 2018.

Second, for companies evaluating a system upgrade, “How do you know if you should consider Dynamics 365?” The short answer is this: At this time, Dynamics 365 is not a good fit for companies that either are government contractors or that have complex project accounting. However, for small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) without those characteristics, the Business Edition of Dynamics 365 could be a great option (The Enterprise edition of Dynamics 365 is designed for large, enterprise level companies). Those SMB companies should consider Dynamics 365 if they desire the benefits of the cloud and if their core need is merely more robust financials that integrate with sales and operations. Moreover, Dynamics 365 Business Edition does have some light project functionality. It could be an option for those who only need a single level task structure with no allocation capabilities.

Will Dynamics 365 ever be a good fit for project-based companies and government contractors? Microsoft and a 3rd party vendor named Progressus is working on developing Dynamics 365 to ultimately compete with the powerful flexibility and functionality of Dynamics SL. It is unknown when that time will come. When it does, Synergy Business Solutions will help companies evaluate whether a cloud or on-premise solution is the right fit for their project-centric organization.
